Capitec is South Africa's largest bank by customer numbers, so "can I fund a forex account from Capitec" is one of the most common questions new traders ask. The answer is yes, and it works the same way as FNB, Standard Bank, Absa or Nedbank: local EFT, Ozow instant EFT, or card. This guide covers the practical steps and a scam pattern that specifically abuses Capitec's peer-to-peer payment features.

The three ways to fund from Capitec

MethodHowSpeedCost
Ozow instant EFTChoose Ozow in the broker deposit screen, pick Capitec, log in to the appMinutesFree to small fee
Manual EFTAdd the broker's local bank account as a beneficiary, transfer in randSame day to 1 dayStandard Capitec EFT fee
CardUse your Capitec card in the broker deposit screenInstantFree on local ZAR accounts, conversion on USD accounts

Step by step with Ozow

  1. In the broker's deposit screen, choose Ozow and enter the rand amount.
  2. Select Capitec from the bank list.
  3. Approve the payment in the Capitec app, including the authorisation prompt.
  4. The deposit reflects with the broker within minutes.

The Capitec scam pattern

A large share of South African forex scams ask victims to pay a person, not a broker. The pitch is a "mentor" or "account manager" who will trade for you, and the deposit instruction is a Capitec account number or a Capitec Pay request in an individual's name. A real broker never asks you to send money to a personal Capitec account. Payment goes to a company bank account shown in the broker's own deposit screen, or through Ozow or a card, always to the broker entity, never to a person.

If anyone gives you a personal Capitec account number, a phone number for Capitec Pay, or an eWallet to fund your "trading", it is a scam. Legitimate brokers only accept payment to a corporate account through their own platform.

Lwazi, 24, Khayelitsha

Lwazi was told to send R3,000 to a mentor's Capitec account to start a managed forex account with guaranteed returns. He sent it, saw fake profit screenshots for a week, was asked for R10,000 more to withdraw, and then the mentor disappeared. A legitimate broker would have had him fund a company account through its own platform, in his own name, with no third party involved.

Fund only through the broker's own deposit screen, to the account or gateway it shows there. If the payment destination is a person's name, stop.

Withdrawing back to Capitec

Withdrawals to a Capitec account work the same as to any South African bank. You add your Capitec account details in the broker's withdrawal section, and once the broker approves the request the money arrives by local EFT, usually within a working day. Some brokers require the bank account to be in your own name, matching your verified identity, which Capitec accounts are, so this is rarely a problem. Card withdrawals return to the Capitec card you deposited with, when the broker supports card payouts.

StageTypical time to Capitec
Broker approves the withdrawalA few hours to 1 working day at a good broker
EFT settles to CapitecSame day to next working day
Total1 to 2 working days

Capitec daily limits and forex

Capitec, like other banks, has daily transaction limits you can adjust in the app. If you plan a larger deposit by manual EFT or card, check your daily payment limit beforehand and raise it temporarily if needed, then lower it again. Ozow payments are also subject to your online-payment limit. None of this is forex-specific, but a declined deposit at the moment you want to fund is avoidable with a two-minute check in the app.

There is nothing unusual about funding a real broker from Capitec. It comes up so often in scam stories only because scammers use personal Capitec transfers, which are fast and hard to reverse. The rule is simple: your money goes to a company, through the broker's platform, or it is not a broker.

Frequently asked

Can I fund a forex account from Capitec?

Yes. Capitec works for forex funding through Ozow instant EFT, manual local EFT to the broker's South African bank account, or card, the same as the other major banks.

Does Capitec allow forex trading payments?

Yes. Paying a locally registered broker entity in rand is a normal transaction. Capitec, like other banks, may report offshore transfers under exchange-control rules if you fund an overseas broker directly.

Is there a fee to fund from Capitec?

Ozow is free or a small fee, manual EFT costs Capitec's standard transaction fee, and card deposits are usually free on a local ZAR account. None of these is expensive.

Why do scams use Capitec?

Scammers ask for personal Capitec transfers because they are fast and difficult to reverse. A real broker never asks you to pay a personal account; payment goes to a company account through the broker's own platform.

How do I know a broker deposit is legitimate?

The payment destination in the broker's own deposit screen is a company bank account, an Ozow gateway or a card processor. If anyone gives you an individual's account number or Capitec Pay details, it is a scam.
