Exness Trading Platforms: MT4, MT5, Exness Terminal and Exness Trade
Exness offers MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, its web-based Exness Terminal and the Exness Trade app. Each trading account is tied to one platform for life, and only MetaTrader runs Expert Advisors. Here is how they compare and which to choose.
Exness supports four main ways to trade: MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, its own browser-based Exness Terminal and the Exness Trade mobile app, plus the MetaTrader web terminals and MultiTerminal for Windows. The most important rule, set out in Exness's Help Center, is that each trading account is linked to one platform, MT4, MT5 or Exness, chosen when you open it and impossible to change later. If you want a different platform, you open a new account.
The choice affects which tools you get, your access to trading robots, and how you trade on the go.

One account, one platform
Exness's Help Center lists where each kind of account can be traded. MT4 accounts work on MetaTrader 4, the MT4 web terminal, the MT4 mobile app and MultiTerminal. MT5 accounts work on MetaTrader 5, its web and mobile versions, Exness Terminal and the Exness Trade app. Accounts created on the Exness platform work only in Exness Terminal and Exness Trade, and not in MetaTrader.
Exness adds that in some regions, MT5 accounts can only be used in MetaTrader 5 and not in Exness's own terminals. You can set default terminals for each account under Profile, then Trading Terminal, in the Personal Area.
MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5
Every Exness account type is available on MT4, which Exness describes as one of the world's most widely used platforms, with automated scripts and Expert Advisors in MQL4. MT5 adds advanced charting, MQL5 robots and built-in news and analysis. Since 1 July 2025, Exness only supports MT4 build 1440 and MT5 build 4755 or later; older versions can't connect, so update before logging in.
You can run MT4 and MT5 on the same computer, and even several copies of each, by installing them into different folders and launching each copy's own terminal file. For several MT4 accounts, MultiTerminal is simpler.
Exness Terminal
Exness Terminal is the broker's web platform, opened by clicking Trade next to an MT5 account in the Personal Area, with nothing to download. The platform has over 100 built-in technical indicators, TradingView-based charts, deposits and withdrawals without leaving the platform, and live chat with support. Custom or third-party indicators can't be installed. An HMR banner on the chart warns when higher margin requirements apply.
Exness Trade app
Exness Trade is Exness's mobile app for Android and iOS. It trades MT5 and Exness-platform accounts, manages your MT4 and MT5 accounts, handles deposits, withdrawals and transfers, and includes live chat and economic news. Our Exness Trade app guide covers it in detail.
Expert Advisors and robots
Exness's Help Center is clear on where automated trading works: only on the MT4 and MT5 desktop terminals. EAs don't run on the mobile or web versions, or on Exness-platform accounts. An EA can be disabled if the balance is too low for it to trade or if its settings are so aggressive that they flood the terminal with requests; if it can't be re-enabled, Exness asks you to open a ticket.
- Download the EA from the MQL Community or another trusted source.
- In MetaTrader, open File, then Open Data Folder, and copy it into MQL4 or MQL5, then Experts.
- Restart the terminal, then under Tools, Options, Expert Advisors, tick Allow algorithmic trading.
- Drag the EA from the Navigator onto a chart and set its options.
Robots need a computer that stays on. Our Exness VPS guide explains Exness's free virtual server and who qualifies.
Login problems and fixes
- Check you're using the trading password, not the Personal Area password, and the server shown for that account.
- Update MT4 or MT5 to a supported build.
- Make sure you're logging in to the right platform: MT4 accounts don't open in MT5, and Exness-platform accounts don't open in MetaTrader.
- If the New Order button is grey, check the instrument is tradable now and the account is funded.
Which Exness platform should you use?
- You run robots or custom indicators: MT4 or MT5 desktop, ideally on a VPS.
- You want everything in a browser: Exness Terminal with an MT5 account.
- You trade mainly on your phone: Exness Trade with an MT5 account.
- You're unsure: open an MT5 account; it works in MetaTrader and in Exness's own platforms.
MultiTerminal for several MT4 accounts
MultiTerminal is a Windows platform made by MetaQuotes for managing several MT4 accounts at once. Exness describes it as the most convenient way to open orders across different accounts at the same time, but notes it lacks several features of MT4 and isn't recommended for most traders. Account managers and traders who split strategies across accounts are the typical users.
At Exness the platform choice is permanent per account, so pick MT5 unless you have MQL4 tools to protect. It's the only account type that works in MetaTrader, the web terminal and the app.
Haris opened an Exness account on the Exness platform for its simple web terminal, then bought an EA and found it wouldn't run there. Exness's rules don't allow switching platforms, so he opened a new MT5 account, ran the EA on MetaTrader desktop, and kept using Exness Terminal on the same MT5 account for manual trades.
