Fixed leverage on Exness index CFDs, normal and during HMR.

Fixed leverage on Exness index CFDs, normal and during HMR.

Exness offers stock index CFDs covering the main US, European and Asian markets. Its Help Center lists AUS200, DE30, FR40, HK50, JP225, STOXX50, UK100, US30, US500, USTEC and an amplified USTEC_x10 contract, plus US30_x10. Leverage is fixed: 1:400 on the US indices and 1:200 on the others. Unlike Exness's stock CFDs, index positions are adjusted for dividends, which can add to or take from your balance.

The US three, US500, US30 and USTEC, are also the only indices on the Standard Cent account, on MT5 and the Exness platform.

Contract sizes and the x10 contracts

Index contract sizes vary. US30 has a contract size of 1, so one lot moves $1 for each index point. US30_x10 is what Exness calls an amplified contract, with a contract size of 10, for more exposure per lot. Minimum trade sizes also differ by index, so check the specification in your platform before placing a trade.

Leverage and higher margin

Index leverage at Exness is fixed by instrument, not by your account setting. During higher margin requirement (HMR) periods, such as 15 minutes before to 90 seconds after high-impact news and around the weekend break, Exness lowers it to between 1:50 and 1:100 on US indices and between 1:20 and 1:50 on others. Our Exness stop out guide explains what that does to your margin level.

Dividend adjustments

When companies in an index pay dividends, index prices drop by the dividend amount. To balance this, Exness applies a dividend adjustment to open positions at 22:00 UTC, Sunday to Thursday: buyers receive it and sellers are charged. Exness notes that in Islamic countries, dividends are still applied to accounts, because they aren't linked to interest in the way swaps are.

If you hold a short index position overnight, check the dividend calendar. A large dividend on a big constituent can mean a noticeable debit.

Swaps and admin fees

Index positions held overnight pay or receive swaps, with a triple swap on Friday to cover the weekend. Exness's overnight admin fee examples for indices are $10 per lot on US30, $1 on US500 and $5 on USTEC, where it applies. Our Exness fees guide covers who may be charged.

Accounts and platforms

Indices are available on Standard, Pro, Raw Spread and Zero accounts on Exness Terminal, MT4 and MT5. On Standard Cent, only US500, US30 and USTEC are offered, and only on MT5 and the Exness platform. Our Exness Cent account guide explains cent lots.

Trading hours

Each index follows its own exchange-linked schedule, with daily breaks and holiday closures. Exness's servers run on UTC+0, and its trading hours widget shows each index's sessions and quote-only periods. During quote-only mode, you can't open, modify or close positions, pending orders aren't executed, and stop out doesn't close positions. See our Exness trading hours guide.

Tips for trading indices at Exness

  1. Size positions from your stop in index points, not from the margin required.
  2. Plan around US data releases, when HMR cuts leverage sharply.
  3. Check the dividend calendar before holding shorts overnight.
  4. Remember Friday's triple swap if you hold over the weekend.

How index moves turn into profit and loss

With a contract size of 1, each point on US30 is worth $1 per lot. A 150-point rise on a 1-lot long position makes $150, and the same move on 0.10 lot makes $15. On US30_x10, the contract size of 10 means each point is worth $10 per lot, so 0.10 lot of US30_x10 moves like 1 lot of US30.

PositionValue of 1 point100-point move
0.10 lot US30$0.10$10
1 lot US30$1$100
0.10 lot US30_x10$1$100
1 lot US30_x10$10$1,000

Margin example

Margin at Exness is lots multiplied by contract size and price, divided by leverage. If US30 trades at 40,000 points, one lot is worth $40,000. At the fixed 1:400, that needs $100 of margin; if HMR drops leverage to 1:50 around a data release, the same position needs $800. Exness charges a fixed margin on indices, so the figure depends on the instrument and the time, not on your account leverage.

A position that fits comfortably at 1:400 can push your margin level towards stop out when HMR applies. Keep enough free margin to cover the HMR figure, not only the normal one.

An index spreads risk across many companies, so a single earnings report rarely moves it as much as it moves one share. Traders who want exposure to US tech without single-stock earnings risk often prefer USTEC to individual names. Our Exness stocks guide explains the share CFD rules.

Fixed 1:400 on US indices is generous, but HMR can cut it to 1:50 in seconds around data. Size every trade so it would survive that margin, not the normal one.

Illustrative case: Wei, 33, Singapore

Wei held a short US500 position at Exness through a week when several large companies went ex-dividend, and saw dividend debits at 22:00 UTC each night. He now checks index dividends before holding shorts and closes intraday when the debits would outweigh the expected move.
