FXTM Demo Account: Virtual Funds, the 14-Day Rule and Limits
FXTM's demo account is free, uses up to $20,000 in virtual money added in $1,000 steps, and lasts as long as you like, provided you trade in the first 14 days. Stock CFDs aren't on demo. Here is how to set one up and use it well.
FXTM's demo account lets you trade real market prices with virtual money. It is free, and you open it with just an email address. FXTM's demo page says you can use up to $20,000 in virtual funds, added in increments of $1,000. Its Help Centre adds that a demo starts with $1,000 and that you can top up practice funds from your account when you run low.
There is one condition worth knowing before you open it. If you don't place a trade within the first 14 days, FXTM closes the demo automatically.
| Cost | Free |
|---|---|
| Virtual funds | Up to $20,000, in $1,000 steps |
| Starting balance | $1,000 (per the Help Centre) |
| Lifespan | Unlimited if you trade in the first 14 days |
| Markets | Forex, metals, indices, commodities, crypto |
| Not on demo | Stock CFDs |
How to open an FXTM demo
- Go to FXTM's demo page and click Open Demo Account.
- Sign up with your email address.
- Choose your platform and start trading with virtual funds.
- Place at least one trade within 14 days so the account stays open.
Two steps is all FXTM asks for. You don't need to verify your identity or deposit any money to practise.
What you can trade on demo
FXTM says you can trade hundreds of instruments on demo, including forex, metals, indices, commodities and cryptocurrencies, with the same tools and features as a live account. The one gap is stock CFDs, which aren't available on demo. Advantage Stocks, the real-share account, has no demo either, according to FXTM's Help Centre.
The 14-day rule and topping up
| Rule | What FXTM says |
|---|---|
| Expiry | None, if you trade in the first 14 days |
| No trade in 14 days | The demo closes automatically |
| Virtual top-ups | Add practice funds in $1,000 steps up to $20,000 |
| Cost | Free to open and use |
Place a small trade on day one. It is the simplest way to make sure the 14-day rule never closes your demo.
Getting the most from the demo
Treat the demo as a rehearsal for the account you plan to open. If you'll start with $100 on Rewards Plus, keep the demo balance close to $100 rather than $20,000; a large virtual balance hides the effect of a losing streak. Use the same leverage you would use live, and set a stop loss on every trade.
Practise the platform as much as the strategy. MetaTrader has many indicators and timeframes that take time to learn, and FXTM's app has one-tap trading from signals. Find out where margin level, free margin and the stop out show up, so you recognise them under pressure; our FXTM stop out guide explains the levels for each account.
- Test MT4 and MT5 to see which you prefer before opening a live account.
- Try Expert Advisors on desktop MetaTrader; FXTM says EAs don't run on mobile.
- Watch how spreads widen around news, when FXTM's leverage limits also apply.
- Keep a trading journal with entry, exit, reason and result.
Demo versus live
A demo shows real price movement, but it can't reproduce everything. Live trades can slip in fast markets, deposits and withdrawals have rules and fees, and real money changes how people trade. Demo results are a sign you understand the platform, not proof that a strategy will make money.
Moving to a live account
FXTM suggests starting small with a Micro account, choosing Rewards Plus or Rewards for spread-only pricing and more rewards, or Advantage for raw spreads with commission. If you want the lowest real-money risk, the Micro account's cent balances are the closest thing to a demo with real money; see our FXTM Micro account guide.
Practising in the FXTM app
The FXTM app works with demo trading too. Its home screen shows balance, equity, open profit or loss, free margin and margin level, with question-mark icons that explain each term. Below that are open positions, trading signals you can turn into an order with one tap, and trending instruments by volume and by daily move.
Placing a trade follows the same steps as live: tap Trade, filter by market, choose an instrument, tap Buy or Sell, set the lot size, add a stop loss and take profit, then confirm. Practising this on a demo means the routine is automatic before real money is involved.
Common demo mistakes
- Opening a demo and not trading for two weeks, so it closes.
- Trading the full $20,000 when you plan to deposit $100.
- Skipping stop losses because the money isn't real.
- Judging a strategy on a few lucky trades rather than a month of results.
When you move on, the Micro account is the natural next step for many. It trades real money in cents on MT4, so the habits built on the demo carry over while the amounts at stake stay small. Traders who already know they want MT5 or more markets can go straight to Rewards Plus from $100.
Set yourself a simple pass mark before moving on, such as a month of trades that all followed your risk rules, rather than a profit target. Rule-following is the habit that transfers to live trading.
FXTM's 14-day rule is easy to miss. Open the demo, place one tiny trade straight away, and you can then practise for as long as you need without losing the account.
Nimal opened an FXTM demo and traded EURUSD and gold on MT5 for six weeks with a $1,000 virtual balance, matching the amount he planned to deposit. He kept a journal of every trade, then opened a live Rewards account once his notes showed he was following his own rules.
