XM for Scalping and EAs: Rules, Costs and Limits
XM allows scalping on every account, news trading and hedging within an account, and supports Expert Advisors on MT4 and MT5. Here are XM's rules, the position limit, the costs that matter to short-term traders, and the pitfalls.
Yes, XM allows scalping. Its Help Center says so directly: "we allow scalping across any of our account types." XM also permits news trading, hedging within an account and partial closes, and both MT4 and MT5 support Expert Advisors. For short-term traders, the limits that matter are the 300-position cap per account, spreads, and what happens to robots when a platform goes offline.
XM's pricing is spread-based on Standard and Ultra Low accounts, with no commission. That makes the spread the whole cost of each scalp, so choosing the right account matters more here than for longer-term traders.
| Scalping | Allowed on all account types |
|---|---|
| News trading | Allowed |
| Hedging | Within one account, not between accounts |
| Expert Advisors | MT4 and MT5 |
| Position limit | 300 open positions and pending orders per account |
| Execution | Market execution, no requotes (XM) |
XM's rules for short-term traders
| Rule | What XM says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Scalping | Permitted on any account type | No minimum holding time |
| News trading | Allowed around major releases | Stable leverage stays in place |
| Hedging | Free within an account, not between two | Hedge in one account only |
| Partial close | Allowed, above the minimum volume | Scale out of positions |
| Position limit | 300 positions and pending orders per account | Grid robots can hit it |
| Offline behaviour | EAs and trailing stops stop when offline | Keep the platform running |
Choosing an account for scalping
Because XM charges no commission on Standard and Ultra Low, the spread is your cost per trade. XM lists spreads as low as 1.6 pips on EUR/USD for Standard and 0.8 pips for Ultra Low, with the same $5 minimum deposit. For a scalper opening many trades a day, that difference compounds quickly. Our XM account types guide and XM spreads guide compare the two.
| 10 trades of 1 lot EUR/USD | Spread (as low as) | Cost at $10 a pip |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 1.6 pips | About $160 |
| Ultra Low | 0.8 pips | About $80 |
Those are XM's lowest spreads; averages are higher and spreads widen around news, so real costs vary.
Running Expert Advisors at XM
Both XM platforms support Expert Advisors and trading robots, in MQL4 on MT4 and MQL5 on MT5. XM notes that EAs stop working when you log out or go offline, as do trailing stops, while open positions and pending orders remain on the server. A robot that needs to run all day therefore needs a computer or virtual server that never sleeps.
An EA that opens many small positions can hit XM's limit of 300 open positions and pending orders per account. Cap your robot well below it.
Hedging rules and margin
Hedging means holding a buy and a sell on the same instrument. XM allows it within an account but not between two different accounts. On forex, gold and silver, hedged positions need no margin, so a hedge can be opened even below a 100% margin level; on other instruments the hedged position needs 50% margin. Our XM stop out guide explains how margin works.
Execution for scalpers
XM uses market execution with no requotes or rejections, and claims 99.7% of orders fill in under 66 milliseconds during major news. Market execution can still slip in fast markets. For scalpers, fills around releases are the main risk, and limit orders help. Our XM execution guide goes into detail.
Lot sizes and trade steps
On Standard accounts, one lot is 100,000 units, the minimum trade is 0.01 lots and the maximum 50 lots per trade, in steps of 0.01. Micro accounts use 1,000-unit lots, with a minimum of 0.1 and a maximum of 100 lots. Scalpers testing a strategy with small real money can start on a micro account and move up.
Scalping pitfalls to avoid
- Scalping on the Standard account without comparing Ultra Low spreads.
- Running an EA on a laptop that sleeps, which silently stops the robot.
- Trading the first seconds after big news with market orders.
- Letting a grid robot drift towards the 300-position cap.
- Using full 1000:1 leverage because XM keeps it available during news.
Test first on demo
XM lets you run up to five demo accounts at once, so you can test a scalping strategy or EA on Standard and Ultra Low side by side. A demo closes after 60 days without use, so log in regularly while testing. Our XM demo account guide explains how to open one.
Partial closes and minimum sizes
Scalpers often take profit in stages. XM allows partial closes on every account type, but a position already at or below the minimum trade volume can't be split and must be closed in full. On Standard accounts the minimum is 0.01 lots, so a 0.01-lot trade is all or nothing.
News scalping at XM
XM allows trading around news and keeps leverage unchanged at those times, which is unusual. It suits scalpers who trade the first minutes after a release, but three things still apply: spreads widen, market orders can slip, and a stop may close beyond its level. If you scalp news, use smaller size than normal, prefer pending orders placed before the release, and check your fills afterwards.
A final practical point on bonuses: XM's account table marks bonus eligibility with a note that some countries are excluded, so check whether your account type and country qualify. A bonus can support margin, but it doesn't reduce spreads, and for scalpers the lower Ultra Low spread usually matters more over a month of trading.
For scalpers on a spread-only account, the spread is the business model. Measure your real average spread per trade over a week before deciding XM, or any account, suits your strategy.
Juan scalped EUR/USD on an XM Standard account and worked out that spreads were eating most of his gains. He opened an Ultra Low account with the same $5 minimum, ran the same strategy for two weeks and cut his cost per trade roughly in half at XM's quoted lows. His EA also moved to a machine that stays on overnight.
