Is XM Broker Safe and Legit

XM is one of the longest-established retail forex and CFD brokers serving global traders. Its Cyprus company, Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd, was licensed by CySEC in August 2010, and XM now reports more than 13.5 billion trades executed. Features such as a low minimum deposit, educational webinars, and its execution policy have helped XM attract traders worldwide among new traders in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. However, popularity alone is not enough to judge a broker’s reliability. The following sections examine of who regulates XM, how your money is protected, where the broker falls short, and whether it is a broker you can consider in 2026.

How Is XM Regulated?

XM operates through multiple legal entities, each licensed in a different jurisdiction. The legal entity that opens your account depends on your country of residence, and this determines the level of protection your account receives.

Trading Point of Financial Instruments LtdCySEC (Cyprus)License 120/10. EU entity under MiFID II. ICF coverage up to €20,000.
Trading Point MENA LtdDFSA (Dubai)License F003484. DIFC-regulated entity for Middle East clients.
XM Global LimitedFSC (Belize)Licence 8557558 under the Securities Industry Act 2021. Primary entity for most international retail traders.

Our assessment: CySEC and the DFSA provide the strongest regulatory oversight within the XM group. The CySEC entity serves EU clients, and only its clients are covered by the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund. Most international clients, including those signing up from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, are onboarded by XM Global Limited under the FSC of Belize, an offshore regulator with no equivalent of the ICF.

How Does XM Protect Your Money?

Segregated accounts. XM stores client funds in separate bank accounts at tier-1 institutions. Your money is kept distinct from the company’s company funds. If the company were ever to become insolvent, Separate client account help keep client money separate from company operating funds, creditors would not be able to access client funds.

Negative balance protection. XM offers negative balance protection to all clients, so you can never lose more than you deposited. For EU retail clients it is also a regulatory requirement.

Investor Compensation Fund (ICF). EU clients of the CySEC entity are covered by the Investor Compensation Fund, which pays the lower of 90% of a client's covered claims and €20,000. Clients of XM's non-EU entities are not covered by the ICF.

SSL encryption and 2FA. XM supports multi-factor authentication for account access, and deposits and withdrawals must come from and return to accounts in your own name.

What Is XM’s Track Record?

XM describes itself as having more than 15 years of industry expertise. Its CySEC licence was granted on 5 August 2010. CySEC records one enforcement action: on 27 May 2013 it fined Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd a total of €10,000, €5,000 over the organisational requirements for client funds and €5,000 over anti-money-laundering and customer due-diligence procedures. Check each regulator’s register for the latest status before you open an account.

The scale is notable. XM reports more than 20 million clients from over 190 countries and more than 13.5 billion trades executed, and says 99% of trades are executed in under one second with no requotes or rejections. These are XM’s own figures.

XM lists industry awards including Best FX Broker, Europe (World Finance Forex Awards 2023), Best FX Service Provider (City of London Wealth Management Awards 2024) and Best Trading Execution 2025 (World Finance). It supports clients in more than 30 languages.

What Are Traders Actually Saying?

The Positive Side

Education is one of XM’s strengths: it offers live education, webinars and seminars, news and analysis, an economic calendar and trading calculators, and XM lists Best Education and Market Research 2026 (Global Brands Magazine) among its awards.

The $5 minimum deposit and micro-lot trading (on a Micro account one lot is 1,000 units) let new traders experience live markets with small exposure. XM says withdrawal requests are processed instantly, with bank wires and cards usually taking 2 to 5 business days to arrive, and it charges no deposit or withdrawal fees.

XM’s live chat is available 24/7, and XM says it supports clients in more than 30 languages. Its own XM App lets you trade all your XM accounts, with integrated TradingView charts.

The Negative Side

Standard Account pricing is XM’s main weakness. XM lists an average EUR/USD spread of 2.0 pips on the Standard Account (as low as 1.6), against 0.8 pips on the Ultra Low Account. For active traders, this cost adds up fast. We break down actual pricing across all tiers in our XM spreads guide.

XM Global has no commission-based raw-spread account: Standard and Ultra Low accounts charge no commission, and the spread is the trading cost. Its tightest pricing is the Ultra Low Account, from 0.8 pips on EUR/USD.

A dormancy fee of $10 a month applies after 90 days with no activity (or the whole balance if it is under $10; no fee on a zero balance). Any trade, deposit, withdrawal or internal transfer counts as activity.

XM offers MT4, MT5 and its own XM App and WebTrader, but not cTrader.

FX Recap’s take: XM’s weakness is pricing on its most accessible accounts. The Standard Account is great for beginners who value simplicity and education, but it is expensive for anyone trading actively. The lack of a commission-based raw-spread account is a disadvantage for high-volume traders.

What Account Types Does XM Offer?

XM offers Standard, Micro, Ultra Low (in Standard and Micro formats) and Shares accounts. We cover each in detail in our XM account types guide. Here is the summary.

Ultra Low$50.8 pipsNone0.01Cost-conscious traders

All retail accounts except Shares support swap-free (Islamic) trading on select instruments through the Ultra Low account type. The demo account is free; XM closes a demo account after 60 days of inactivity, and you can hold up to 5 at once. Both MT4 and MT5 are supported across all account types. Are There Any Red Flags?

FX Recap believes in giving the full picture. Here are the areas where XM raises questions.

Most traders land on the Belize entity. The CySEC licence is strong, but it serves EU clients. If you live outside the EU, your account is likely to sit with XM Global Limited under the FSC of Belize, an offshore regulator, and the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund does not apply. This does not mean XM is unsafe, but your regulatory backstop is weaker.

Standard Account pricing is above average. XM lists an average EUR/USD spread of 2.0 pips on the Standard Account (as low as 1.6). XM compensates with education and accessibility, but the cost matters for anyone trading more than a handful of times per week.

No raw-spread account. XM offers no commission-based raw-spread account (only the Shares Account charges commission), so its lowest forex spreads are on the Ultra Low Account, from 0.8 pips on EUR/USD.

Bonus culture. XM promotes trading bonuses in eligible regions. Bonuses cannot be withdrawn (profits can), and withdrawals reduce the bonus proportionally. Bonus-driven trading can encourage overtrading and poor risk management. New traders should be cautious about making deposit decisions based on bonus offers rather than actual trading conditions.

No cTrader. XM offers MT4, MT5 and its own XM App and WebTrader with integrated TradingView charts, but not cTrader.

Who Is XM Best Suited For?

XM’s strongest demographic is new traders who value education and accessibility over pricing. The $5 entry point, micro-lot trading, a free demo account and support in 30+ languages create a beginner-friendly environment. If you are starting from zero and want to learn while you trade, XM is hard to beat.

Where XM falls short: experienced traders who want the tightest possible pricing. The Ultra Low Account starts from 0.8 pips on EUR/USD, and there is no commission-based raw-spread account. Real share trading via the Shares Account requires a $10,000 deposit.

How Does XM Compare to Exness?

These two brokers attract similar audiences but approach the market differently. Here is a direct comparison on the points that matter most.

XM wins on education, instrument range, and accessibility. Exness wins on pricing, withdrawal speed, and raw-spread availability for international traders. For beginners, XM is the stronger choice. For cost-conscious active traders, Exness generally delivers lower all-in costs.

Most Common Question About XM

Is XM a scam?

No. XM has more than 15 years in the industry and holds active licences from CySEC, the DFSA, the FSC (Belize), the FSA (Seychelles) and the FSC (Mauritius), and reports more than 20 million clients. CySEC fined its Cyprus company €10,000 in 2013 over client-fund organisation and anti-money-laundering procedures.

Is XM regulated by the FCA?

No. FCA firm 705428 is Trading.com Markets UK Limited, which operates the separate Trading.com brand, not XM. The strongest licence under the XM brand is CySEC’s.

Can I lose more than my deposit?

No. XM offers negative balance protection to all clients, so you can never lose more than you deposited.

How fast are withdrawals?

XM says withdrawal requests are processed instantly, and bank wires and cards usually take 2 to 5 business days to arrive. XM does not charge withdrawal fees. Third-party providers may apply their own charges. We test actual processing times in our XM withdrawal guide.

Does XM accept traders from the USA?

No. XM does not hold CFTC or NFA registration and does not accept US-based clients.

What is the minimum deposit?

$5 for Micro, Standard and Ultra Low accounts. The Shares Account requires a $10,000 minimum.

Does XM charge inactivity fees?

Yes. After 90 days with no activity, XM charges a dormancy fee of $10 a month (or the whole balance if it is under $10). No fee is charged on a zero balance, so if you plan to stop trading for a while, withdraw your funds first.

Is XM good for beginners?

For learning and starting out, XM is one of the best options available. The $5 deposit, micro-lot trading, free demo, and daily live webinars create an entry-level experience that few brokers match. The trade-off is wider spreads on the Standard Account. Once you are past the learning stage and trading actively, you may want to move to a broker with tighter pricing. Our step-by-step XM account opening guide covers the registration process.

Does XM offer a demo account?

Yes. It is free and you can hold up to 5 demo accounts at once, but XM closes a demo account after 60 days of inactivity (you can open a new one at any time). Available on both MT4 and MT5. Our XM demo account guide walks through the setup.

FX Recap’s Final Verdict

XM is a legitimate, regulated broker with more than 15 years in the industry. Its CySEC licence is a strong credential, and it also holds DFSA, FSC Belize, FSA Seychelles and FSC Mauritius licences. The $5 entry point and micro-lot trading remove financial barriers for new traders, and its education offering is extensive.

The honest caveat is about cost and entity. Standard Account spreads are wide (XM lists a 2.0-pip EUR/USD average), and there is no commission-based raw-spread account. If you need tight spreads, XM is not the cheapest option. And if your account sits with XM Global Limited under the FSC of Belize, your regulatory protection is weaker than under the CySEC entity. None of this makes XM unsafe. But it means you should go in knowing exactly where your account sits and what that does (and does not) protect you from.
