Best Time to Trade Gold in Kenya (East Africa Time)
From November to mid-March, gold's busiest hours run from about 16:00 to 20:00 in Nairobi, with US data at 16:30. Here is the full day in East Africa Time, both seasons, and the hours to skip.
The best time to trade gold from Kenya is usually the London and New York overlap: about 16:00 to 20:00 East Africa Time from early November to mid-March, and 15:00 to 19:00 from late March to October. That is when XAU/USD has the most liquidity and the tightest spreads, and when the biggest scheduled events land, including US jobs and inflation data at 16:30 EAT in the northern winter. For most people in Nairobi this conveniently falls in the late afternoon and early evening, after work.
Kenya stays on UTC+3 all year, while London and New York move their clocks. So every gold time in Kenya shifts by an hour twice a year. This guide gives both versions.
| Best window (Nov to mid-Mar) | 16:00 to 20:00 EAT |
|---|---|
| Best window (late Mar to Oct) | 15:00 to 19:00 EAT |
| US data (08:30 New York) | 16:30 EAT in winter, 15:30 in summer |
| Fed (FOMC) statement | 22:00 EAT in winter, 21:00 in summer |
| Daily break in gold | 01:00 to 02:00 EAT in winter |
Gold's day in Nairobi time: November to March
Gold trades almost around the clock on weekdays. CME Group's gold futures, the reference market, run from Sunday 18:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time with a one-hour daily break, and most brokers' XAU/USD contracts follow a similar timetable. Converted to East Africa Time, a weekday looks like this from early November:
Late March to October
When the UK and US move to summer time, everything happens one hour earlier in Kenya, apart from the Tokyo session, because Japan does not change its clocks.
| Event | Nov to mid-Mar (EAT) | Late Mar to Oct (EAT) |
|---|---|---|
| London session | 11:00 to 20:00 | 10:00 to 19:00 |
| New York session | 16:00 to 01:00 | 15:00 to 00:00 |
| London-New York overlap | 16:00 to 20:00 | 15:00 to 19:00 |
| LBMA Gold Price auctions (10:30, 15:00 London) | 13:30 and 18:00 | 12:30 and 17:00 |
| US data (08:30 New York) | 16:30 | 15:30 |
| FOMC statement (14:00 New York) | 22:00 | 21:00 |
| Daily break | 01:00 to 02:00 | 00:00 to 01:00 |
For a few weeks in March and around late October to early November, the UK and US change clocks on different dates, so some times are an hour off for that period. Your broker's MetaTrader server clock is usually different again; check the XAUUSD Specification window for its sessions.
Planning around a working day
| Your day | Gold window that fits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Office hours to 17:00 | 17:00 to 20:00 EAT | Back half of the overlap; avoid the minutes around 16:30 data |
| Free mornings | 11:00 to 14:00 EAT | London session; steadier, fewer data shocks |
| Evenings only | 20:00 to 23:00 EAT | New York afternoon; quieter, spreads still reasonable |
| Late nights | Avoid 00:30 to 02:30 EAT | Daily break and thin reopening |
Events that move gold most
- US non-farm payrolls: usually the first Friday of the month, at 16:30 EAT in the northern winter.
- US consumer price inflation: monthly, also at 08:30 New York time.
- Federal Reserve decisions: eight scheduled FOMC meetings a year, with statements at 22:00 EAT in winter. The press conference follows half an hour later.
- Unscheduled news: geopolitical events can move gold at any hour, which is one reason to always use a stop-loss.
Spreads usually widen in the minute before a big release and can stay wide for several minutes after it. Many traders stay flat until the first reaction settles. The day's events are on our forex news page.
Times to avoid
- Around the daily break, about 01:00 to 02:00 EAT in winter: spreads are at their widest. See why gold spreads widen at the daily open.
- The first minutes after US data and Fed statements, unless that is your strategy.
- Late Friday night, when liquidity fades before the weekend and Monday may open with a gap.
- US and UK public holidays; check the holiday calendar.
A simple daily gold routine
- Before 15:00 EAT, check the economic calendar for US data, Fed speakers and central bank decisions.
- Mark the day's key levels on the chart during the London session, when the market is steadier.
- Trade the overlap, 16:00 to 20:00 EAT in winter, and stay flat for a few minutes around any 16:30 release.
- Set every stop-loss on the server, sized so a loss costs 1% of the account or less.
- Close or protect open trades before the daily break, around 01:00 EAT in winter.
A routine like this keeps your trading inside the hours when costs are lowest and avoids the few moments each day when spreads jump. It also builds consistent records, which makes it easier to see which hours actually suit your strategy.
Why liquidity decides your costs
Every gold trade pays the spread, the gap between the buy and sell price. When many banks and traders are active, as in the London-New York overlap, prices are quoted tightly and the spread is small. In thin hours, such as just after the daily break, fewer prices are quoted and the spread can be several times wider. The same strategy can therefore cost much more if it is traded at the wrong hour. Our guide to how many pips gold moves per day shows typical ranges.
Gold with a Kenyan account
Several brokers licensed by Kenya's Capital Markets Authority offer gold alongside currency pairs, often with M-Pesa funding; our guides to CMA-licensed brokers and brokers that accept M-Pesa list them. Gold moves faster than most currency pairs, so size positions carefully: a 0.01 lot is usually one ounce. The gold lot size calculator helps, and our guide to how much money to start in Kenya covers account size.
A bank clerk in Mombasa finishes work at 17:00. She trades gold from 17:30 to 19:30 EAT on weekdays in the northern winter, the second half of the overlap. On payroll Fridays she waits until 17:00 before looking for a trade, half an hour after the 16:30 release, and she never holds a trade into the 01:00 daily break. Her spreads are lower and her stops are hit less often by sudden spikes.
Set a phone alarm for 16:25 EAT on US data days in the northern winter. Use it to check open trades and decide whether to stay flat through the release.
