USD/CHF worked out at 0.8179 on Thursday 5 November, using the ECB's euro reference rates, 24 pips above Wednesday's 0.8155, the lowest rate of the last 20 working days. The pair is below its 20-day (0.8256) and 50-day (0.8227) averages and resting on the 100-day (0.8160). Its October highs have each been lower, from 0.8353 on 1 October to 0.8306 on 28 October.

Distance is measured from the price at ECB rates of 5 Nov, gold 03:58 UTC.
Three setups for the days ahead: sell a rally into 0.8225 to 0.8235 with a stop above 0.8270, sell a confirmed close below 0.8150, or buy a close above 0.8260. Today's US jobs report is the main event for the pair, so expect wider swings around 13:30 UTC.
USD/CHF tends to move most in the London session and the London and New York overlap, when European and US data come out.

| Bearish | 0.8225–0.8235 | 0.8270 | 0.8160 | 0.8120 | 1:1.4–3.3 | 65–115 |

A soft US jobs report would add to the dollar's recent losses against the franc. A close below 0.8150 would break the 100-day average and open 0.8120, then 0.8000.
Strong US payrolls could extend Thursday's dollar gains. A close above 0.8260 would put the pair back over its 20-day average and open 0.8305, then 0.8335.
On the reference rates, USD/CHF rose from 0.7990 on 20 August, the low of the last 60 working days, to 0.8353 on 1 October. Since then the highs have stepped down: 0.8337 on 8 October, 0.8334 on 14 October and 0.8306 on 28 October. Four falls in five working days then took the rate to 0.8155 on 4 November, the lowest of the last 20 working days.
The pair is below its 20 and 50-day averages and resting on the 100-day at 0.8160, with the RSI near 41. A close under 0.8150 would break that average and open 0.8120; a close above 0.8260 would recover the 20-day average and end the run of lower highs.
USD/CHF fell 107 pips over the last seven working days on the reference rates, from 0.8286 to 0.8179, with three rises and four falls. A 20-pip rise to 0.8306 on 28 October was the high of the period. A 56-pip fall on 30 October was the largest move, and further drops of 34 and 44 pips took the pair to 0.8155 on Wednesday before Thursday's 24-pip rebound.

Thursday brought the Bank of England's first rate rise of this energy shock: Bank Rate went to 4% from 3.75% by eight votes to one, with one member wanting 4.25%, and the Bank now expects UK inflation to reach around 5% by the middle of next year. US data followed, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting third-quarter productivity up 3.6% at an annual rate and unit labour costs down 0.7%. On the Treasury's par curve the 2-year yield fell to 4.46% from 4.58% and the 10-year to 4.84% from 4.90%. Even so, the dollar was firmer across the board on the reference rates, which were set at about 13:15 UTC, before the US figures. Spot gold was $4,045.50 at 03:58 UTC on Friday (gold-api.com), down from $4,138.40 a day earlier. The US October jobs report comes out at 13:30 UTC today. Currency prices on this page are European Central Bank (ECB) reference rates from Thursday 5 November; the live chart shows where the market trades now. On the other side of the pair, our US jobs report story covers today's release. The Swiss National Bank's policy rate is 0%, held in September, against a Fed range of 3.75% to 4.00%; the SNB next decides on 10 December.
The Swiss franc tends to gain when investors turn cautious, so a sharp fall in global stock markets or a jump in tension in the Middle East usually pushes USD/CHF lower.
USD/CHF is resting on its 100-day average at 0.8179 after a run of lower highs. The bias is bearish below 0.8230: sell a rally to 0.8225 to 0.8235, sell a close under 0.8150, and turn bullish only on a close above 0.8260.
The franc has been the steadier side of this pair for a month. The 100-day average at 0.8160 is the line to watch today.
“I would sell a rally into 0.8225 to 0.8235 with a stop above 0.8270, looking for 0.8160. A close above 0.8260 would change my mind.”
