City Index Is Gone: StoneX Retires the Brand as FX Revenue Slides 19%

City Index, one of the UK’s longest-running trading brands, stopped existing as of September 12. Parent company StoneX Group has relaunched the business as StoneX Trading, retiring the City Index name entirely and folding its self-directed retail arm into the wider StoneX identity.

StoneX has owned City Index since 2020, when it acquired GAIN Capital Holdings, the company that owned both City Index and FOREX.com. This rebrand continues a strategy StoneX has followed since then: unifying its commercial, institutional, payments and retail trading operations under one global name rather than running them as separate brands.

The numbers behind the timing

The rebrand lands alongside a less flattering figure: retail FX and CFD revenue at the unit fell 19 percent. StoneX has pitched the relaunch as giving retail clients access to the same market intelligence and institutional-grade insight previously reserved for its bigger clients, which reads as much as a retention move as a branding exercise.

For existing clients, StoneX says nothing changes operationally. Accounts, platforms and support carry over as normal, and the transition is limited to the name, the website and client-facing communications. Anyone searching for City Index going forward will land on StoneX Trading instead.

The broader signal is one worth noting: a legacy brand disappearing after a double-digit revenue decline is a pattern that shows up across the retail FX industry when margins get squeezed. It’s the same pressure behind IG Group’s own round of layoffs this month, and StoneX is unlikely to be the last major group to fold a well-known name into a single corporate identity this year.

Trader’s takeaway: if you’re an existing City Index client, update your bookmarks to StoneX Trading and confirm your login still works, but there is no need to move funds or re-verify your account. If you’re shopping around for a broker, a rebrand that follows a 19 percent revenue drop is worth weighing alongside spreads and platform features, using our broker methodology or the full broker directory rather than brand recognition alone.
